The north side of Corpus Christi, bordered by Port Avenue, Broadway, and Interstate 37, was once a vibrant area for African Americans. In the 1960s, the Hillcrest community became isolated from the rest of the city with the construction of Interstate 37. As time went on, many businesses failed. This led to people leaving the area for better opportunities. As a result, there are many abandoned commercial buildings and houses in this neighborhood. Operation Clean Sweep, carried out by community leaders, was a way to eliminate criminal activity in the area. Volunteers for this project helped demolish blighted structures which were used by drug dealers.
