Summer 2001. TERRENCE MCNALLY’S CORPUS CHRISTI. This Chad Allen extravaganza (he produced, and later stepped into the role of “Joshua”) was beautifully directed by yet-to-be Tony Nominee (ROCK OF AGES) Kristin Hanggi of BARE fame. It’s a tough show, re-telling the Christ story through the lens of homosexuality but she, and the cast of wildly talented actors, brought great storytelling to this LA premiere.
When Kristin told me she wanted to tell the Christ story in movement alone before a word of McNally’s text was spoken, I about lost my shit. But inspiration was drawn from McNally’s central love story (“Joshua” and “Judas”) as well as Damon Intrabartolo’s beautifully touching score. And then there were the actors, who without their commitment to the material and to trusting me, led to some of my best, and most honest, work.
